Summary:

Under the guidance and supervision of the Director of Health Literacy & Language Services or designee. The Bilingual Health Promoter of the Ibero Community Cancer Prevention Education is responsible for performing cancer prevention and education activities focusing on the Latino community to improve health disparities. In addition, the Bilingual Health Promoter collects and maintains demographic information and works in collaboration with URMC Wilmot Cancer Institute and other community brokers to coordinate services.

  • Reports to the Director of Health Literacy & Language or designee.
  • Establishes and maintains good working relationships with program staff, the Wilmot COE team, as well as staff from other partner programs, professionals from other community programs and community brokers to coordinate services for the community.
  • Learns about the role of the cancer prevention and education Health Promoter (Community Health Worker), which role shall include developing cultural competence, health literacy, motivational interviewing, health coaching and related skills required to share cancer prevention education and information in the community primarily among Latinos.
  • Learns about cancer awareness, prevention, early detection, and risk reduction strategies for multiple cancer types to decrease the health disparities among underserved populations.
  • Identifies Latinos in the community through outreach and engagement activities to share information about cancer awareness, prevention, early detection, and risk reduction strategies.
  • Organizes a schedule of outreach and engagement activities with the purpose to disseminate cancer education information and available health resources primarily to the Latino community.
  • Collects and maintains data including participants' demographic information and feedback on education presentations.
  • Maintains excellent daily records of outreach and engagement activities, and cancer awareness and prevention presentations.
  • Organizes and prepares educational materials and programs based on cancer awareness, prevention, risk reduction and early detection strategies.
  • Prepares and submits the program's monthly report and any other required reports. Inputs data from multiple sites into the University's Redcap database, contributes to data management and data analysis.
  • Attends formal and informal training sessions both within and outside the Supplier agency.
  • Attends support and supervision meetings as scheduled.
  • Participates in community activities as representative of the Program when assigned.
  • Is available to work outside regularly scheduled work hours as needed.
  • Any other duties as may be assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Authority:

The employee exercises initiative and independence in establishing his/her schedule for meetings with staff, participants, and community agencies. Follows established procedures for conducting the tasks required of the position. The individuals must be creative and resourceful to be able to assess situations to determine if a crisis is involved and how to best proceed within the framework of the agency's and program's policies and procedures. Consults with the supervisor if in doubt before proceeding.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Associate Degree in Human Services or related field preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience working with the Latino community in health related and human services programs.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Word (Power Point, Excel).
  • Able to provide own transportation and a valid N.Y.S. driver's license.
  • A combination of training and experience other than the specified, if judged to be adequate for the job, may be accepted by the President and CEO

Physical Demands:

The position does require occasional standing, squatting, lifting of up to approximately 10 lbs. And frequent sitting.
